As a requirement for the ME 170 course at Iowa State University, we embarked on a reverse-engineering project. Our group chose a fishing reel we found at Walmart as the object of our study. We began by meticulously disassembling the reel, systematically naming and cataloging each individual part. To accurately capture the dimensions, we utilized a caliper and created detailed hand-drawn engineering drawings for every component.
With a comprehensive understanding of the reel's structure, we proceeded to 3D model each part in SolidWorks, ensuring precision and accuracy. Once complete, we carefully assembled the modeled components, employing appropriate mates to replicate the reel's original functionality and behavior.
To demonstrate the inner workings of the reel, we animated our digital model, showcasing its dynamic operation. This animation not only brought the reel to life but also provided a visual representation of the intricate mechanisms at play. With the final deliverable prepared, we confidently presented our project to the class, sharing our insights, findings, and the iterative process we followed during the reverse-engineering endeavor.
The fishing reel reverse-engineering project provided us with invaluable hands-on experience in deconstructing and analyzing a complex mechanical system. Through meticulous disassembly, detailed drawings, precise 3D modeling, and dynamic animation, we delved deep into the design and functionality of the reel.
